Why Art Therapy?

Art therapy is an approach that combines talk therapy with creativity. While creating art, you'll primarily communicate visually to express your inner emotions, experiences and feelings. Being guided through an exploration of the art provides an opportunity to increase your self-awareness, strengthen your self-expression and find personal meaning.

Art Therapy with Children, Youth & Teens

Art therapy provides an opportunity for children, youth and teens to experience a safe and comfortable space for self-exploration. Some other opportunities include:

  • Giving expression to their feelings, experiences or beliefs through art making.

  • Experiencing a non-judgmental environment where they can be themselves.

  • Learning about and becoming aware of their unique strengths.

  • Finding a sense of belonging and acceptance and connection.

  • Building resilience to navigate uncertainty and challenges.

  • Practicing how to be a good friend and enhancing social skills.

Art Therapy with Adults

For adults, it is also beneficial to experience a comfortable nurturing space where we feel seen and heard. Some other opportunities include:

  • Building self-awareness and gaining insight into our behaviors and thoughts.

  • Practicing our autonomy by making empowering choices for ourselves.

  • Rediscovering creativity and finding joy in the art making process.

  • Processing and navigating life transitions with support.

  • Focusing on our strengths and recognizing how they make each of us unique.

  • Reducing feelings of isolation and fostering meaningful connection with others.

What does a session look like?

Erin, an art therapist in Victoria BC, offering art therapy services to a client.

To settle into the space and ease into art making we usually start with a warm up. This could be a doodle, art game or a quick scribble.

The Beginning

This is our art making time! We will either continue with a thread of what came up from our warm up activity, I might provide you with an invitation to create something more specific or you can be spontaneous.

The Middle

Before you go we take a look at your art to explore and reflect a message it may have for you. I may ask a couple questions about your art to find some additional insight!

And The End

Where can you find me?
